Gentle, evidence-based therapy for postnatal and perinatal depression with clinical psychologist Joanne Toh at Clarity Psychology. In-person and Telehealth appointments available.
When Motherhood Doesn’t Feel How You Expected
Pregnancy and new parenthood are often described as joyful times — but for many, the experience can be emotionally overwhelming, distressing or isolating.
You may feel anxious, irritable, sad or numb. You might be struggling with sleep, motivation, appetite or bonding with your baby. Or perhaps you’re feeling disconnected from your partner, yourself, or the idea of motherhood entirely.
These experiences are far more common than many people realise. One in five new mums in Australia experience perinatal or postnatal depression — and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
You’re not failing. You’re not alone. And with the right support, things can get better.
Meet Joanne Toh – Perinatal Psychologist
Joanne Toh is a warm and compassionate clinical psychologist with a master’s degree in clinical psychology. She has worked with parents across schools, hospitals and community health services, and brings deep respect for the challenges and transitions of early parenthood.
Joanne supports individuals through:
- Postnatal depression and anxiety
- Pregnancy-related depression
- Birth trauma or loss
- Difficulties with bonding or identity as a new parent
- Relationship strain during the perinatal period
- Pre-existing mental health conditions during pregnancy
Her approach is gentle, collaborative and deeply validating — grounded in trauma-informed care, evidence-based therapy, and an understanding that every parent’s experience is unique.
Clinics That Aren’t So… Clinical
What Is Postnatal Depression?
Postnatal depression (PND) can occur any time in the year following childbirth. It affects your mood, thoughts, energy, and capacity to cope — often at a time when you’re expected to be coping the most.
It’s different from the “baby blues,” which usually pass within a few days. PND may last longer and feel more intense, making it harder to function day-to-day or feel emotionally connected.
Some parents feel intense guilt or shame for not “enjoying” motherhood. Others fear they’ll be judged or misunderstood. Please know: these feelings are valid, and help is available.
Therapy That Supports You — and Respects Your Journey
At Clarity Psychology, we understand the complexities of postnatal and perinatal mental health. Joanne offers therapy that supports you — emotionally, practically, and without judgment.
Treatment may include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – to help shift unhelpful thinking patterns and build coping strategies
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – to help you navigate painful feelings while reconnecting with your values
- Schema Therapy – for those with longstanding patterns of self-criticism or guilt
- Mindfulness strategies – to manage overwhelm, anxiety or emotional exhaustion
- Trauma-Informed Care – particularly helpful if your birth or postpartum experience was distressing
You’re welcome to bring your baby to in-person sessions if that helps — we want therapy to work practically for you.
What to Expect
You don’t need to have everything “figured out” to start therapy. In your first session, Joanne will gently explore what you’ve been going through, and work with you to decide on the best support options.
