A pre-sentence report is an independent psychological evaluation that assists the court in making informed sentencing decisions — setting out the psychological factors and circumstances that may have contributed to the offending, the person's suitability for treatment, and practical recommendations for management and rehabilitation.
Our reports are prepared by registered psychologists holding doctoral qualifications in clinical and forensic psychology, for County, Magistrates' and Supreme Court matters, from our Carlton clinic.

Each assessment involves a thorough investigation of the context of the allegations and the defendant's background — including any underlying psychological issues that may have influenced their actions. Through face-to-face clinical interview, psychometric testing, review of relevant documentation and, where appropriate, consultation with other professionals involved in the person's care, we build a comprehensive formulation. Reports evaluate the potential for reoffending, consider suitability for treatment options, and conclude with practical recommendations for ongoing management, specialist support, and rehabilitation.

Our forensic psychologists understand what courts and tribunals need: assessments grounded in validated instruments, clear formulations, and recommendations that can be acted on. We are available to attend court where required and to provide expert evidence consistent with the County Court Expert Evidence Practice Note. We understand court timeframes and work within them while ensuring evaluations remain thorough. We accept referrals from solicitors, the courts, Legal Aid, and self-referring individuals who have engaged a solicitor.

How quickly can a report be prepared?
Timeframes depend on the matter and court dates. We understand the time pressures of criminal proceedings — contact our office with your dates and we'll confirm in writing what's achievable before the assessment commences.
What does it cost?
Fees depend on the complexity of the matter and are agreed in writing before the assessment commences, along with the turnaround time. Please call our Carlton office to discuss.
Can an individual arrange their own report?
We accept referrals from solicitors, courts and Legal Aid, and from self-referring individuals who have engaged a solicitor — the report needs to serve the legal process, so legal representation matters.
