WorkSafe-funded psychology requires a referral from a medical practitioner — usually your GP, who also manages your certificate of capacity.
Have your claim number ready
We'll need your WorkCover claim number and the name of your WorkSafe agent or insurer to bill them on your behalf.

If your claim includes a mental injury, you may not have to wait for a decision before treatment begins. Under Victoria's provisional payments scheme, WorkSafe can pay for reasonable treatment — including psychology — for up to 13 weeks while your claim is being determined, even if it is ultimately not accepted. Your WorkSafe agent will confirm whether you're eligible; once you have that confirmation and a referral, you can book with us.

Can I choose my own psychologist?
Yes. You're entitled to choose your treating psychologist — you're not limited to one your employer or insurer suggests.
Will my employer know what I discuss?
No. Your sessions are confidential. WorkSafe requires clinical reporting about your treatment and progress as part of your claim, but your employer is not party to what you discuss in the room.
Can I do sessions by telehealth?
Yes — WorkSafe pays for telehealth psychology related to your claim.
What if my claim includes both physical and psychological injury?
That's common, and the two are often connected. Your psychologist works alongside your GP and other treaters as part of your overall care.

WorkSafe pays at its scheduled rates and we bill your agent directly. If a gap applies with your psychologist, we'll confirm it before your first session.
